Everyone knows that drinking enough water is essential to living a healthy life. But, so many of us struggle with it! I definitely have over the years.
The reason so many of us have a hard time drinking enough water every day is because there are too many (terrible) drink options for us to choose from.
We need to STOP constantly drinking our calories + drink more water every day.
It starts by leaving the sodas, energy drinks, + all the fake-ingredient, “low calorie” drinks behind.
If you want to start:
- feeling more energized
- having clearer skin
- increasing your mental focus
- losing weight + keeping it off
you need to make drinking lots of a water a habit each day.
So, today I am sharing my 10 favorite hacks that I personally use to drink more water every single day.
It took time. But, I made it a habit (after yearsssssss of struggle) + you can, too!
My 10 Favorite Hacks to Drink More Water Every Day
1. Drink from a large bottle (or a few)
This is one of the best pieces of advice I can give to drink more water every day. You may think it’s super corny, obnoxious, or annoying to carry around a big water bottle all day. But, I swear by it! I like filling up a big water bottle (this is mine!) once or twice a day because it’s very clear to me how much water I have left to drink.
When I fill smaller water bottles, I find that I lose track of the amount (because there is a million other things going on all day). But, when I drink from bottles like this it’s SO much easier to drink enough water! Another option is to buy 3-4 smaller bottles that all add up to your daily water goal (here is my small one — I own 3 + have used this kind for 10+ years).
2. Carry it everywhere
As simple as this hack is to drink more water, it’s super important. You should always have your water with you. It doesn’t matter if you’re at home, in your car, at work, shopping, on vacation, etc. You NEED to have access to your water so you can stay hydrated throughout the day.
So, the key is finding a water bottle that works for you in terms of carrying it around, storing it, + finding one that is spill/leak proof. Many of us spend lots of time choosing the best shoes, bags, + decor for our home. The same should go for choosing a great water bottle that fits your lifestyle!

3. Fill it the night before or as soon as you wake
Like any habit you make, the more planning you do ahead of time the more successful you will be so you can drink more water! So, I recommend that you fill up your water bottle(s) the night before. If you have one big bottle, fill it up before bed or as soon as you wake + place it where you won’t forget to start drinking from it the next day!
If you’re using multiple bottles, fill those up in advance, too. Then, place them in the designated areas for the day ahead:
- Put one in your bathroom [drink as you’re getting ready]
- Put one or two in your work bag
- Put one in your gym back or by where you workout
- Put one in you living room or kitchen
The more you see your water bottles throughout the day, the better chance you will have of actually drinking them!
4. Start drinking as soon as possible
The earlier you start drinking your water, the easier it is to get it in because your window is larger. But, you need to do what works for you. Personally, I can’t drink water till about 11am or it upsets my stomach. But, when 11am hits I almost always start drinking my water. After then, I grab + drink from my big bottle almost every hour to stay hydrated.
I don’t recommend just drinking water in the afternoon + evening or you will be constantly chugging + peeing. Doing it this way will make it feel like such a chore + the habit will be very hard to make stick.

5. Drink from it before every snack or meal
We have all heard this over + over. But, dang, it’s so stinkin true. Not only will drinking water before every snack + meal make it easier to drink more water all day. But, you will end up eating less throughout the day, too.
This is because many of us eat when we are thirsty because our brains don’t register the difference. I recommend drinking water every time you’re hungry + waiting 20 minutes. If you still feel hungry, you probably need some more calories. If not, you were just dehydrated!
6. Set reminders on your phone
If you’re working on making drinking enough water a habit, you definitely need to set some reminders. This will skyrocket your progress + set you up for success daily.
Go into the reminders section of your phone + set a reminder throughout the day that say something like “DRINK MORE WATER.” Have it repeat every day at the same time during hours that you are awake. Eventually you will need them less + less. Eventually, not at all when it becomes a habit!
7. Keep extra water/bottles in key places at all times
You will forget your water bottle(s) once in a while. So, always have a backup plan! Keep empty water bottles at work that you can fill. Store water bottles in your car for when you’re out + about all day.
I personally like to have extra bottles like this with filters built in so you can fill it from a sink anywhere + the water is safe to drink + tastes fine!
8. Examine your pee all day long
Although this might sound gross, make it a habit to look at your pee all day long to help you drink more water. You want to aim to have very light yellow pee throughout the day. That means you are hydrated.
You’ll notice darker pee colors sometimes + that means it’s timeeeeee to start chugging your water! You will most likely notice you probably have a slight headache, are not focused, feel hungry, + just have overall low energy levels. You can quickly reverse that with some water!
9. Stay accountable + make it a habit with someone
Drinking enough water can be as challenging as making healthy eating choices or moving enough throughout the day. So, I highly suggest trying to either work with a coach (like me) or create the habit with a friend!
You need accountability for any new habit that you want to last. Even if you start posting about your water on social media or telling those around you to remind you to drink more water! You’ll most likely inspire others to drink more water, too!
10. Don’t be afraid to chug when you’re behind
With building healthy habits, you NEED to let go of the “All Or Nothing” mindset. You are going to have days you’re wayyyy behind on your water by 1pm, 4pm, or even 8pm. CHUG YOUR WATER!
Drinking enough water effects your snacking at night, your sleep, + the beginning of your next day. So what if you have to wake up to pee once or twice?! Totally outweighs all the negative effects of being dehydrated.
