So, you have all of these big dreams and goals to eat healthier, get fit, and find more happiness?
But, somehow things keep getting in the way each day. You just seem to be getting farther and farther away from where you want to be…
Do you relate to any of these?
- You want to get clear on your life goals + dreams.
- You want to become a boss at planning + strategizing.
- You want to stop feeling overwhelmed when going after your goals.
- You want to learn how to find internal motivation that lasts.
- You want to develop goal-related habits + routines that actually stick.
- You want to find the time + discipline to work towards your goals.
I recently read the book Eat That Frog: 21 Ways to Stop Procrastinating + Get More Done in Less Time by Brian Tracy.
Oh. My. Goodness. It changed the way I view productivity each day. Within just a week I was able to start applying what I learned and began to completely reshape my habits each day and UP-LEVEL my life.

7 Effective Productivity Hacks from Eat That Frog
1. EAT YOUR 3 BIGGEST AND UGLIEST FROGS RIGHT AWAY
Out of all the productivity tips Tracy gives you in this book, this one is HANDS DOWN the most impactful one he provides.
He explains that you are most productive when you tackle the 3 most important tasks (“frogs”) of the day right away!
What are important tasks? Those are the things you need to do that relate to your BIG goals!
For example, if you want to lose 20lb, a step towards that goal might be to workout every day. Instead of waiting till after work (when, chances are, you might make excuses not to workout), get it done right when you wake up in the morning!
The point is, we often procrastinate the “big” things on our to-do lists until the very last minute or we don’t do them at all. This leads to goals not being reached and dreams not being fulfilled.
So, instead, his idea is to “eat your 3 frogs” in the beginning of the day! Takes the stress away and you will feel so accomplished.
2. GAIN CLARITY + WRITE IT DOWN TO MAKE IT REAL
Before you can truly understand what “frogs” you need to eat every morning, you need to get very clear on what your goals are.
He explains that people that are able to get more done in life MASTER the art of clarity with their goals and dreams.
When you are vague and confused about what you really want, you won’t reach your goals because you won’t know the exact steps to take.
So, Tracy advises to sit down with pen and paper and get as clear as you can about your goals. When your goals are floating around your mind, they are fantasy and often never come true.
Instead, make them real and tangible. Write them down with pen and paper.
Tracy explains that this gives your goals and dreams energy and often motivates you to work to achieve them! Also, he notes that people who write down their goals are 5-10x more likely to accomplish them!
3. CREATE STEP BY STEP LISTS FOR EVERY GOAL
This is another powerful, life-changing productivity tip that I am so grateful that I learned from this book.
Instead of just “doing something” to work towards your goal, you need to make a clear plan of the steps you need to take in the specific order they need to be done.
Throughout the book, he harps on the fact that so many people waste time doing things that do not actually need to be completed. This often causes people to become addicted to being “busy.”
Instead, do the following:
- Write down your goal on the top of a piece of paper.
- Make a list of every single step needed to reach that goal.
- Next, break down each step into even smaller steps.
- Then break those small steps down into even smaller steps.
Do this until you cannot break down the steps anymore. Instead of looking at a gigantic goal and feeling inadequate and overwhelmed, this strategy helps you look at each little step at a time.
Gigantic goal: Working out 5 days a week.
Little step (“frog”): Putting on gym clothes.
Doing this takes the power away from the goal and makes the tasks so much more approachable.
If you eat at least 3 frogs a day, that is 21 frogs a week. Think of how much those frogs add up to you reaching your goals! One bite at a time…
4. APPLY THE 80/20 RULE TO EVERYTHING
I am sure you have heard of the 80/20 rule when it comes to having a well-balanced diet. But, Tracy explains how this can be applied to so many aspects when it comes to productivity.
Pretend you have 10 tasks on your to-do list today, whether it be personal or work-related. 2/10 of those tasks are usually “frogs” that will get you towards your big goals. Usually, those are the 2 that people procrastinate most about doing.
Learn to refuse to indulge with the 8 tasks (80%) before completing your big 2 (20%).
Whatever you choose to do over and over eventually becomes a habit. So, the more you attack the 20% right away, the quicker that will become the way you live.
Overall, Tracy explains (+ is so right!) that the 20% tasks are the ones that will bring you happiness and satisfaction in the long run once they are completed.
5. BECOME A LONG-TERM THINKER
This productivity hack is simple, but blew my mind.
Tracy explains that superior thinkers are people who can predict the consequences of doing or not doing something. They don’t give in quickly to instant gratification and make sure that what they are doing TODAY lines up with what they want to have or embody in the future.
This is because they know how to delay gratification in order to have a much better payoff (money or happiness) in the future. So, their internal motivation to focus on their “frogs” and not lesser tasks comes from their “motive.”
They KNOW what they want in the future and live by that clarity.
6. CREATE IMAGINARY DEADLINES + CRUSH THEM
Imaginary deadlines are for goals where no one is making you complete. Usually, they are personal goals and dreams.
At work your boss often wants you to finish a project and submit it by a certain date. An actual deadline. But, personal goals (losing weight, working out, reading more, etc) require YOU to manage your time.
So, to motivate yourself, Tracy advises that you create and live by imaginary deadlines.
Ok, so you want to lose 20lb. By when? Two months… six months… a year? What is the EXACT date and time? Write it down with your goals.
You need to put pressure on yourself if no one is there making you get the work done!
At work, your reward for completing projects is money. So, you get it done to receive your paycheck.
Become CLEAR on the reward you are getting for completing your goals, set a specific date, and work towards them.
7. TRAIN YOURSELF TO BE AN OPTIMIST
Let me be clear. This productivity hack is not about just being positive and feeling good about your goals.
Tracy writes thats the most successful people that crush their goals are optimists.
These high-vibe people:
- DECIDE to respond positively to situations they are in, as well as what people say to them.
- REFUSE to let their mood and emotions change just because of obstacles that come in their way.
- DON’T complain often because it does nothing in return and is a waste of energy.
Overall, Tracy has worked with thousands of highly successful people that meet their goals every year. Every single one is an optimist. Including himself!
