Want tips for eating healthy at parties that actually work?
Warm weather brings lots of celebrations, joy, + laughter! But, it’s also a typical time that people want to work on making healthier eating habits since they are wearing shorts, tank tops, + bathing suits this time of year.
So, all the salty, fatty foods at parties, as well as the carby/sugary alcohol, tend to throw many people off-track with healthy eating habits they’re trying to develop at the same time. It can be difficult to have willpower when surrounded by such yummy, satisfying foods + treats at parties!
So, that’s why I put this post together. There are little tips + hacks you can use to help you stay on-track with your goals, while still enjoying any party you go to.
**Just know that you DON’T need to eat perfectly at a party or do any of the tips I mention below, especially if you only go to a small handful each year. You can 100% indulge for 3-5 hours once in a while, go a little over your calories, throw your habits out the window, + you will be able to get back on track the second the party is over [or the next day.
But, if you are looking to have a bit more willpower at parties + eat healthier [especially if you have lots in a season], take a look at the list below!
In this blog post, I break down 5 effective tips to eat healthy parties you go to in the future.
Eat before you go
One tip to eat healthy at parties is to have a protein-filled snack or meal before heading out. Especially if you know the food being served there will not be the healthiest or you just want to have a little more willpower. An empty stomach will definitely make it difficult to stick to healthy choices.
Here are some ideas for healthy, protein filled snacks + meals:
- Tuna fish sandwich
- Crockpot chicken salad
- Skinny egg sandwich
- Eggs with cheese + bacon/sausage
- Protein waffles or avocado waffles
- Skinny banana protein smoothie

Give yourself reasonable limits
The next tip to eat healthy at parties is to make promises with yourself that align with your goals before stepping into the party. They don’t have to be major limits. The promises can be small promises you make with yourself that will help you stick to the habits you’re trying to create. They should NOT feel super restrictive + “diet-like.” So, be mindful of letting yourself enjoy the party, but making it a goal not to overindulge so guilt sets in later on. Maybe choose 1 or 2 things, like the ones listed below.
Here are some examples of limits you can set:
- Only having 2 alcoholic drinks
- Drink 3 bottles of water
- Eat a large salad without dressing before grabbing anything else
- You’ll skip the buns/condiments/dressing, etc.
- Dessert will be off-limits

Bring a healthy dish
If it’s a potluck or you just want to contribute to the celebration, be the person who brings the healthy dish so you know there will be an option for you if you do want to eat on the healthier side. You cannot control what someone serves at their party + might not feel comfortable making suggestions if they’re not close friends/family. So, bringing your own healthy dish, even if it’s a healthy dessert, sets you up for success!
Here are some ideas:
- Skinny guacamole
- Beef enchiladas
- Chocolate avocado muffins
- Skinny chicken cordon bleu
- Oven-roasted parm Brussels sprouts
- Cheesy cauliflower mashed potatoes
- Crockpot chicken salad
- Cream cheese + pork stuffed peppers
- Cheeseburger wraps
- Air fryer french fries
- Tuna raisin walnut salad or quesadilla
Hang with people, not the food
Another tip to eat healthy at parties is to do your best to enjoy the party + to not make the focus of the party on the food being served. A big tip is to keep yourself away from the buffet/snack table whenever possible for less temptation! If you sit at/near the table with the food, you will find yourself mindlessly putting food in your mouth to keep your hands busy.
Here are some things you can focus on, instead:
- Talking to people, especially standing or walking around
- Dancing if there is music
- Swimming if it’s a pool-party atmosphere
- Volleyball, corn hole, horseshoes
- Getting involved with the kids playing
Alternate with water
Drinking? To eat healthy at parties, alternate with 1-2 glasses of water for every drink you have to stay hydrated. Even if you’re not drinking alcohol, drink a glass/bottle of water every half hour to an hour to stay fuller for longer.
By doing this, you will:
- Help flush out your body if you’re indulging a bit
- Stay clear-minded so you have more willpower
- Will feel more energized, full, + have less hunger pangs
- Won’t get tipsy so fast + will make better decisions
